Trusting Your Own Body

by Leisa on February 24, 2009

It has been a great start to the week of detoxing and education about raw food and health at this latest retreat – and one point that everyone is learning really well – is that we CAN trust our own bodies.

We are taught so thoroughly to not trust the messages our body gives us.  If we have a headache, we take a tablet – we have a faulty body that has created pain which is a mistake – and we must get rid of it.  Very little thought is given to why we might have a headache, whether we are dehydrated, working too hard, stressed, magnesium deficient, allergic to something, exposed to a toxin, hormonally imbalanced – the list goes on…. So we cover up the minor symptom with medication – and then wonder why we end up with a chronic illness years later.  The messages were there to change something in our lives – but we weren’t listening.

One of the principles I teach is that the body is our friend.  That the messages we receive in the way of illness, disease or pain – are the body’s way of adapting to the environment we have provided it with, and it is doing it’s best to keep us in the most perfect state of health it can – given the tools we have given it to work with. The body knows what perfect health is, and is always doing its best to return to that state.

During a detox, we learn this more profoundly because our senses are heightened and our body is acting in ways that we would normally look upon as unhealthy.  There may be headaches, diarrhoea, nausea, different aches and pains, fatigue, skin breakouts and emotional reactions.  But we learn to EMBRACE these changes as they are just symptoms of the body cleaning house – and when we can understand that, we can support the process and not be anxious about what is happening.

We learn to trust in the body’s wisdom and accept that we we are at right now in terms of health – is the perfect adaptation of our body to our circumstances.  If we want to change and heal our body – then we need to change the environment (food, exercise, water, sunshine, stress management, toxins etc) we live in, and allow the body to heal.

It is just amazing to see in action – and this beautiful group of people are living this concept right now!
